According to CIL IV, the painted recommendation, found in March 1858, was

According to Epigraphik-Datenbank Clauss/Slaby (See www.manfredclauss.de) this expands to

M(arcum) Epidium

Sabinum

IIvir(um) iur(e) dic(undo) o(ro) v(os) f(aciatis) dignum iuvenem

Suedius Clemens sanctissimus

iudex facit vicinis rogantibus      [CIL IV 1059]

According to Cooley, this translates as

We beg you to elect Marcus Epidius Sabinus duumvir with judicial power,

a worthy young man. Suedius Clemens, most venerable judge, elects him at

the request of his neighbours.
